“For most of history, man has had to fight nature to survive; in this century he is beginning to realize that, in order to survive, he must protect it.” ― Jacques-Yves Cousteau

Michael and I decided to take advantage of the holiday last Friday and go on a quick getaway.  We chose a 4-night cruise from Miami to Key West, then Bimini, Bahamas, then back to Miami on the Virgin Voyages Resilient Lady ship.

I think I had too many expectations, and a lot in life is about expectations.  This was my third cruise, and the most expensive.  The first one was with MSC.  On that one I loved the food, the service and the shows.  The second was a Royal Caribbean.  It was also enjoyable, great service, but the food was lackluster.

Virgin Voyages is an adults-only cruise, with balconies in every room.  The food is not buffet style, it is more like a food court. You have to go to each stand and order what you want.  That sounds great, but in reality, it was bad.  I thought that it would equate with fresh prepared and tasty food, instead it is reheated food.  We got burgers that were sitting there getting cold and paninis that were hot on the outside and ice cold inside.

There are other foods around the ship, like pizza and ice cream, but I didn’t think it was anything special.

They do have specialty restaurants that are supposed to be great, but unfortunately since this was a last-minute trip we couldn’t get reservations to the best ones.  We were able to get to 2, not the best ones, and they were good, and definitely is the way to go.

This is a picture of some of the desserts, which looked amazing, but only 2 passed my taste test: the Pavlova and macaron(not pictured).

The service was spotty at best.  Sometimes the servers were too busy talking to each other to help. And when they helped there were no smiles, it was a chore.  I was spoiled with the treatment of the prior 2 cruises.  The attendant for our room was very nice and a couple of the waiters in the restaurant were good.  But as a whole the service was disappointing.

The pools were tiny and super crowded.  Not that I ever go in those pools, but this is the worst I have seen: too small and too many people.  The DJ was too loud, but everyone seemed to be enjoying it, so I guess I grew out of my partying days.  I didn’t expect a party cruise and that is what I got.  This is what I think Carnival would be like.  Again… expectations.

The positive in this cruise is that every room has a balcony.  From now on it will be only rooms with a balcony for me.

We enjoyed walking around Key West and wouldn’t mind going back there to spend more time.   I will have those pictures in a next post.

The safety drill was interesting to watch.  I didn’t think they would put all lifeboats in the water, but they did and cruised around for some time before returning and loading them up again.

The stop in Bimini was okay.  Beautiful place, beautiful waters, but the beach club was crowded with no available chairs in the shade.  The food served there was the highlight of the day.

It was awful? No!  Would I do a Virgin Cruise again? Probably not, but who knows.

I need to try some of the others, such as Norwegian, Celebrity and Viking. And perhaps I need to lower my expectations.

We arrived back in Miami at night instead of the morning due to someone having a medical emergency.  The view of Miami at night was gorgeous:

“Listen to the mustn’ts, child. Listen to the don’ts. Listen to the shouldn’ts, the impossibles, the won’ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me… Anything can happen, child. Anything can be.”
― Shel Silverstein

It has been almost 1 month since I have been here.  I am not sure how that happened☹ Life happens, I guess.

I have returned from Brazil and life resumed as usual, with work headaches here and there.

We had to find a replacement for our IT provider that just retired.  So far so good with the new vendor, but changes are always scary for me.

I am trying to resume my routine of walking on the beach in the mornings.  Encountering turtles is always a special reward. I have seen 2 this morning. For some reason I cannot upload the videos. So here is a picture.

Michael and I decided that we will not be skiing in Ushuaia, Argentina this summer.  The logistics were driving me crazy, so we will skip skiing this summer.  We will be going to NY for a couple of weeks to spend time with my sister and visit friends there.

In the fall we will head to Brazil to spend some time with mom and my brother, and perhaps doing some traveling within Brazil.  There is so much of Brazil I don’t know.

I want to do more traveling and mentioned to the boss/partner my wishes to retire sooner rather than later.  This week he sent me this laptop extender.   It will make it easier to work on the go. I got his message 🙂

Are you watching the World Cup?  This time I am not that excited as in prior years.   I am disappointed with Brazil’s team.  There is so much politics and money involved. They draft players for reasons other than actual good playing.

Still, I am following it and trying to watch all the games.  I love the feel-good stories that come out of it.  I love the underdogs that overcome difficulties and come out on top.

Speaking of that, have you heard of Vozinha, the goalie of Cape Verde?  He is 40 years old and just so happy and excited to be at the World Cup.

Cape Verde is small African country consisting of 10 small islands.  They share my same language: Portuguese.  It is the first time that Cape Verde qualifies for the World Cup.

Vozinha exhibited so much heart in playing in his first game against Spain.  Spain is one of the favorites to win the World Cup.   It was a huge feat to tie with them, and not to concede a single goal.

A Brazilian broadcaster decided that he would stand behind Vozinha and try to get him more visibility.  They asked their viewers to follow him.  The result?  He went from under 50k followers yesterday morning, to 9.7 million now and growing.  The population in Cape Verde is 530,000.

The power of social media. The power of World Cup.  With so much tragedies, disgrace and hate these days, I look for anything to make me believe in love, heart and hope.

I am not editing this, otherwise it will be another month before I post again. So, I am sorry for the typos.

“I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge. That myth is more potent than history. That dreams are more powerful than facts. That hope always triumphs over experience. That laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death.” ― Robert Fulghum, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten: Uncommon Thoughts On Common Things
