expecting more from doctors, expecting too much, no answers only guesses, no answers only questions, right versus left, unrealistic expectations, vertigo and dizziness
“Peace begins
When expectation ends.”
―
It is always the same story for me when it comes to doctor visits. I am always so hopeful before I go, and then so disappointed in the end.
I expect to get answers and a proposed plan of action, but normally end up with just maybes. I expect validation of my feelings and symptoms, and end up feeling like it was all in my mind or the issue so minor that it was all a waste of time.
“He wondered, with some annoyance, whether he would finally learn what he wanted to know, or if he would have in the end to content himself with what he already knew. He felt that, at his age, patience was ceasing to be a virtue and was becoming a luxury he could less and less afford.”―
On Friday I went to an ENT to talk about my vertigo symptoms. Conveniently for me there is one right in my office building.
I was given an hearing test and then saw the doctor. According to the doctor I have some, very minor hearing loss on the right ear. Nothing to worry about it and nothing to do about it, as there is no nerve damage. It is not related to the dizziness that I have been feeling either.
I explained that even though I am still wobbly in the mornings I am 90% better by now. Still I would like to discover the cause of it. He said that this is the type of situation that is very hard to diagnose. Guessing game here we go.
Last time I had vertigo, about a year ago, my primary doctor instructed me to take allergy pills. According to him the cause is often nasal congestion, even though I didn’t feel congested at all and don’t fee it now.
“The most exquisite pleasure in the practice of medicine comes from nudging a layman in the direction of terror, then bringing him back to safety again.”
―
This time I took allergy pills a couple of times and also motion sickness medication. They seemed to help a little.
The doctor said he would try something. He lowered the table while I sitting up straight, then he pushed me back really fast. It was uncomfortable but okay. Had that been done on prior days I would probably pass out from the dizziness.
He said that because I had taken the medications they were probably suppressing the symptoms. I mentioned that I had only taken it a couple of times and the last time it was a day ago, but he said that still would interfere.
He asked me not to take any more medication and return in one week. I asked: “Should I still come back if by then I have no more symptoms? The symptoms are almost all gone by now.”
He said he still wants to see me anyway. I said okay, but now that I think about it, what is the point? I am not sure I will go back if there aren’t any symptoms. I don’t see the point.
“The doctor arrived towards dinnertime and said, of course, that although recurring phenomena might well elicit apprehension, nonetheless there was, strictly speaking, no positive indication, yet since neither was there any contraindication, it might, on the one hand, be supposed, but on the other hand it might also be supposed. And it was therefore necessary to stay in bed, and although I don’t like prescribing, nevertheless take this and stay in bed.”―
Today, Sunday, I feel 95% better. We shall see how I feel by Friday when I have the follow up appointment.
I understand that I am not being realistic in my expectations every time I see a doctor. He is only human and not a miracle worker.
Moving on from this topic, I have one curiosity. Is everyone more prone to have physical issues on one side of their body versus the other? All my problems are on my right side. Is that because I am right handed and perhaps use and overuse more my right side?
These are my issues:
- Right wrist. I was developing carpal tunnel on my right wrist. I now use the mouse on the left hand and all is fine.
- Right hip. I have bursitis, arthritis and a tiny tear on my right hip. I got used to living with the pain.
- Right clavicle. I have Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) on my right clavicle.
- Right eye. Every now and then I have a sharp pain in the back of the right eye accompanied with some redness. I have a check up every year by a specialist and he says it is nothing.
- Right ear. And now I have been told that I have a minor hearing loss on the right ear.
Is there a spiritual meaning to that? I think there is a spiritual meaning to everything, so perhaps someone can enlighten me. Why is my right side crying for attention and help?
“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” -―
Gosh, I made myself sound so physically damaged 😦 Still I feel like I am only 25 years old. That is, when the room is not spinning.
Wow! That’s a lot for a 25-year-old to deal with, but it sounds like you ARE dealing and you’re self-advocating and what can be better than that? xo

You sound normal.
When he raises you from lying down he is also meant to measure your blood pressure and heart rate both before, at the time, and a few minutes after.
I’ve never had anything on just one side that I can recall.
I like all your quotes.

Hi Eliza
Indeed, I guess normal for my age, but I refuse to be my age 🙂
He just pushed me down while looking to one side and then to another. I guess to see how I felt. Nothing else.
I am not going back, specially since this morning I felt 99% better. I think by tomorrow I will get up with no issues.
Many blessings to you! ♥♥

We are getting older… symptoms for various things like you mention start popping up. I do feel that we have to look at our emotional well being which is tied to illness. Have you read Louise Hay? She has some good books about healing.

Thank you for reminding me about Louise Hay. I remember buying her book but I don’t think I ever read. Time to look for it and actually read it.
I am not enjoying this part of getting old… I like only the becoming wiser part 🙂
Blessings to you! ♥♥

You can find her on Youtube too. She’s nice to listen too… suddenly with her affirmations, lots of worries are resolved. 🙂 Also, if you have a library card, use the OverDrive App or the Libby App and you can download so many books and audio too for FREE, it’s a wonderful resource, especially when you are traveling or if you are stuck in an airport.

I search all around the apartment and couldn’t find it. I am going to check her on YouTube and the library – I had not thought of those resources. Thank you for that!

My right side is very weak and bad now… my left side is fine… the right side gives me problems. (That’s just because I had breast cancer – am fine and cancer free now) just that right side is a bit wonky and weak lol
Have you been googling your symptoms ? Careful with that but just to read up and see what others have maybe said?
Doctors are human – and not all are good. Advocate for yourself also. ✌️
Good luck – hope you feel better 🙏

I am glad that you are cancer free and feeling fine now.
I guess one side is a bit weaker than the other even if we don’t notice much.
Google is a huge temptation and yes I often Google the symptoms to be more informed but I don’t let it dictate what I do.
Doctors are only human indeed – I often have too high expectations for them.
Blessings to you! ♥♥

Hahaha yeah I don’t like googling symptoms too much, because then I think I am dying lol …kidding but it can freak me out sometimes. Always take with a grain of salt lol
I am that patient that gives Dr’s a little bit of a hard time… I want to know and make sure they know what they are doing, and also practice medicine for the right reasons. I do not freely give them my admiration and trust… just because they have that degree – that does not mean they are a good doctor.
So yeah – I’m very careful with doctors now – but in my defense – while going through one of my cancer surgeries a surgeon messed up really badly, because he didn’t care and was careless. So hence my apprehension was created lol – I want to make sure I have good doctors now, they have to earn that title with me. They are only human.
Blessings to you as well – sorry for your troubles 😘✌️hope you feel better!

absolutely, I loved Google, but too much researching can backfire
Opposite of you I am that patient that will not question the doctor and agree with everything he says – at least to his face. But more and more I realize that a degree alone does not make someone good at anything.
You have good reason to doubt them and only want the good and knowledgeable. I will take your lead and will ask more questions and expect more from them.
Thank you for the good wishes…it helps! ♥♥

I understand – I used to be that way too. Was only my experiences that taught me to question more. I needed that though… I was too trusting.
I still learn so ya know … life makes you lol ✌️
I hope you are feeling better and doing well… stay safe and well wherever you are ✌️ be strong! 💪

As we get older, all sorts of strange symptoms come and go. I think it has to do with stress, emotions and what we eat. Maybe other things, but I find if we work on “those areas,” slowly the symptoms go away.

I completely agree with you!
Some foods no longer agree with.
Also stress exacerbates it all for me.
I guess learning how to deal with stress would help me a lot.

I have no idea if there is a spiritual meaning to the predominance of issues on the right side of your body when you happen to be right-handed, Who knows? The doctors can’t tell you … and I certainly won’t venture a guess. But, I can tell you tht I m right handed with an artificial right knee and arthritis in my right hand and right ankle, and a hearing loss in my right ear. But before you get your ah-hahs going too loudly, get this: I also have a hearing loss in my left ear (I wear hearing aids and they correct both problems), arthritis in my left knee (but I refuse to go through the pain of a knee replacement again, and worse arthritis in my left hand than my right. So, there goes that theory! Nobody told my body it’s supposed to just shut-up and work like it did when I was younger. I think it’s too late to tell it now! 😦

Hi Jan
hahaha I was doing exactly that, I was going ah-ha, I am on to something…then you started describing the other side’s troubles lol
I knew that age would come, but it always seemed so far away. Now it seems it is right here and it seems unavoidable.
But I am still going to fight it!! lol
Wishing you a blessed week! ♥♥

Have you tried going to a doctor who practices holistic / integrative care?

Hi Gail,
Actually a good friend, well an online date that became a friend, is a holistic doctor and he has helped me with some stuff.
Unfortunately I am having trouble following his number 1 advice. He wants me to give up gluten and sugar. I did a saliva test that he said it showed that I am very sensitive to gluten.
I like certain foods too much (bread and chocolate).
For the record, I am eating much less of those but still probably more than I should.
But thank you for bringing the topic up. I do need to take a second look at my diet.
Blessings to you! ♥♥

I had a similar experience. My holistic doctor suggested I give up dairy and coffee. I followed her advice for a while but then read articles that suggested otherwise. But I did continue her suggestion to take fruit and vegetable powder supplements. Even though I include fruits and vegetables with almost every meal, I think more is better.

Only we know our bodies, so we need to take their instructions and use what we think is good for us. I know I would benefit from no gluten and no sugar, but I still want to enjoy food, so it is a balance I am trying to achieve.
Fruit and vegetables powder? I am going to look into them. Sound interesting, even though I am awful with powder. I bought Collagen in powder form and it was unable to take it.
Wishing you a blessed day! ♥♥
