broken streaks, Duoling French, it is okay not to be okay, lazy or comfortable, mosaic passion, perfection is illusion, trying again
“I am careful not to confuse excellence with perfection. Excellence, I can reach for; perfection is God’s business.”
― Michael J. Fox
My Duolingo streak is broken. I made it to day 339. I had a choice of paying to keep my streak going. Call me frugal, but I didn’t pay.
Perhaps I should have. It has been 3 or 4 days and I still haven’t gone back to doing my daily French lessons. It is easy to leave it for later if I no longer have a streak to protect.
All of a sudden I feel like a loser. How could I break my streak? Keeping that streak going made me feel powerful and capable of grand things. Stupid, right?
“Don’t mistake activity with achievement.”
― John Wooden
It will take me another year to get to that number again, once I start it, if I start it. Perhaps keeping a streak going is not for me. Maybe I should make a point of breaking streaks.
Duolingo is not the only thing that I have been neglecting lately. This blog, my exercise routine, healthy meals, books, etc, they are all suffering.
I have been choosing to start early at work, instead of going to the gym. I often choose Netflix and Sedecordle instead of reading a book. I sometimes eat cheesebread and fries for dinner, and the list goes on and on.
None of that really makes me a loser. Nothing has the power to, if I don’t let it. It is a matter of choice. Lately, I have been making choices that are not wise, but it feels comfortable. Perhaps that is just a nice way to say I have been lazy lately.
“In the pursuit of perfection, I forgot I was already enough.”
― Caroline George, The Summer We Forgot
And so what? Who says that I have to be always productive and perfect? Here is a newsflash to myself: You are not perfect. Perfection is an illusion. Just aim to be the best human being you can.
I am embracing the fact that it is okay for things not to be okay. It is okay to be off my routine. It is okay to let things go for a little bit; it is okay not to pressure myself to always be doing something.
It is okay not to feel in control at times. It is healthy to realize that streaks end, that sometimes we go off course. It is the perfect time to reassess my priorities. It is the perfect time to do things out of love and want, and not out of the sense of obligation and in search of perfection.
“Have no fear of perfection – you’ll never reach it.”― Salvador Dali
Sometimes one needs a break, needs to step off the gas pedal. I am yet again choosing to be kind to myself. I am giving myself permission to be less and do less.
I know I will slowly get back to the things that feed my body, mind and soul in a healthy way. I will go back to pursuing interests and passions, instead of coasting.
For now, I breathe. I get work done, deadlines met. I have finished another mosaic, which makes my heart sing (posting it next).
And for another great way to waste my valuable and scarce time, I just signed up for Match.
Because hope never dies.
“Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all.”
― Emily Dickinson
That’s a lovely way of looking at it. I’m not that far yet into my journey. If I fall off my routine I still get annoyed with myself. I used to get angry but that’s been better lately. I want to achieve, prove to others how good I am… I never stood still to see I already was good enough for me. And indeed, we may never reach perfection as there’s always that small tidbit that we’d like to change about ourselves.
Thank you for showing me this perspective, I really can learn from it. 😊
Have a loveky day 🌸

Hi Cynni,
I am glad that my post resonated with you.
It is good to have goals and work towards achieving them, but not achieving them, or being sidetracked along the way, shouldn’t mean that we are not good enough, or that we are failures.
We are good enough, actually we are sheer perfection, right now, right as we are, succeeding, and also failing.
It is okay to always strive to change and grow, but not become so obsessed by it, that we forget to live and enjoy life.
Thank you and blessings to you!

You don’t have to prove anything to anyone. If people cannot accept you as you are, then it’s their problem. Not yours. At the end of the day, you know how good you are and are the only person who has to believe in you. Then anything is possible.

Thank you both for the kind words and replies! I’ve long felt like nothing I did was ever good enough. I’m learning to overcome but it takes time. 😊
Thanks again and I’m wishing both of you a lovely new start of the week ☀

It is a great thing when we realize that we are our own worst critics, and we decided to be kinder to ourselves.
It is a learning process!!

It really is! And when no one points out any errors it may be very hard to detect by yourself. 😊 So I’m glad it got pointed out and I can work on it.

Ow I did struggle with being told about it. But in the end, it helped me to see I needed changes and I was able to start that process. I’m feeling better already so it’s really been a big help. 😊

I have been trying to look inwards and see where I can improve.

I think having things pointed out to me were really helpful as I took things as normal, even though they weren’t… So having others tell me they weren’t good for me did the trick. 😊 I hope you can find your right journey to travel and it will bring you much enlightening. Have a wonderful weekend 🌸.

Always take care of yourself and it sounds like you needed a break from the busy-ness! Just remember that you can’t pour from an empty cup. So enjoy your break! You’ll come back to all that stuff and be stronger than before. Send me a follow on Duolingo, mia384714.

I love this: “can’t pour from an empty cup.”
I didn’t know I could follow people on Duolingo. I log in, do my lessons and leave. Perhaps I should explore the app more. It will give me a reason to get back to it.
Blessings!

You are so “me” that’s its uncanny. I’m currently doing a study called “It’s Okay Not to Be Okay”. This is actually a part of self care, I believe. You gain a certain amount of rest. You will come out of it with possibly better focus. Maybe a slightly different focus, which is okay too. So glad you recognize this and thank you for bringing this to light. I know I have beat myself up during times like these as being lazy, sad, or depressed. It’s just part of it. Can’t always be at the highest peak of a roller coaster. Even the lowest parts add to the fun of the ride. Enjoy! (I may print this out and hang on my fridge. Ha! 💕)

Hi Andi,

Great comment! So many good points here. I do believe that sometimes we have to take a step back to get the momentum to move forward.
May I will do the same. The more reminders the better.

For a long time I used to go to a gym before work. It was wonderful… until I burned out from it. Everything in one’s own time/place, eh? BTW, I love the quotes you use throughout each of your posts — a wonderful blogging flourish. – Marty

Noone is perfect. We do our best and that is perfect. Do what you enjoy, life is to be enjoyed and live it.
I am only on streak 113, so long way to go. I must say if I have to pay though I will not go on either. I’ll look for you too so I can follow you, I didn’t know that either. I am called just “Daisy” on duolingo for fun. 🙂
Enjoy your days, whatever you eat or do, enjoy and it makes the day perfect.

Your feelings are completely normal! Sometimes I have taken a month or so off from the gym as well. I had to shift my focus on being as awesome as I allowed myself to be, instead of as you said, being perfect. Do not be afraid to be even more powerful, strong, and amazing than you already are! Just hoping this isn’t self sabotage in fear of your fabulousness! Anything worth doing, is never easy. And good for you for getting back out there! We all jump off the wagon from time to time and maybe something different whether it be types of food, physical activity, etc might spur you on along a new path that you may find more interesting. 🙂 I’m sure you will find it, wherever you go!

As for me, often times I follow the thoughts of Rose Milligan.. 🙂
Dust if you must, but wouldn’t it be better
to paint a picture, or write a letter,
bake a cake, or plant a seed.
Ponder the difference between want and need.
Dust if you must, but there is not much time,
with rivers to swim and mountains to climb!
Music to hear, and books to read,
friends to cherish and life to lead.
Dust if you must, but the world’s out there
with the sun in your eyes, the wind in your hair,
a flutter of snow, a shower of rain,
this day will not come round again.
Dust if you must, but bear in mind,
old age will come and it’s not kind.
And when you go, and go you must,
you, yourself, will make more dust!
(Rose Milligan)
Until we meet again..
May flowers always line your path
and sunshine light your way,
May songbirds serenade your
every step along the way,
May a rainbow run beside you
in a sky that’s always blue,
And may happiness fill your heart
each day your whole life through.
