“Fraud is the daughter of greed.”
― Jonathan Gash, The Great California Game
Yesterday, I got the following email:
I didn’t know what to think, but I immediately grew concerned. What if I lose my blog’s name? A name that I have been using for over 10 years, and that means a lot to me.
How can a simple email have the power to make me feel so vulnerable? Well, I know the answer to that: because I allow it.
“To feel helpless is to acknowledge our limitations, but it does not have to be an acceptance of them.” ―
Moving on:
I contacted the IT support for my company. He said that the email and company was legit, and they would probably come back and try to get me to sign up for the other extensions.
I replied to the email saying I was not affiliated with that company and I would give no permission to anyone to use that name.
I haven’t heard anything yet. This was just last night, so I assume I will hear something today.
In the meantime, I was talking to M and mentioned the email (without mentioning my blog’s name, since I don’t really share it with anyone I know – now, if you are a stranger, please come on over lol). This morning he sent me an article, that eventually led me to: https://squelchdesign.com/featured/chinese-domain-name-registration-scams/
So, it is a scam! And it has been going around for years. So, folks, be aware! I am not sure how the scam unfolds, but I will not be going along to find out. For me it stops here.
How do I make sure my blog’s name protected? Or is there nothing to worry about?
It is such a scary world, online and otherwise. The more I read, watch, see what is going on around me, the more I want to run and hide. I am becoming afraid of my own shadow.
Instead of hiding, I will be boarding a plane to Brazil tonight. I am returning in a few days. You all have the most blessed weekend!

Hi Carol Anne,
Thank God indeed!! I did reply to the email, but they haven’t reached out again. Of course I will just hit the delete button next time!!
The scammers are getting very clever.
Blessing to you!!

I would have thought it was a scam. There are so many around and you really have to be careful. If you don’t know the person sending you emails, or your known companies… they are scammers.
I just delete things like that.

One thing I really enjoy about WordPress as a host platform is the resourcefulness of their “happiness engineers”. I don’t need them very often but when I do, they’ve never failed to address my concerns. You might reach out for their recommendation on avoiding this sort of thing in the future.

Thank you for sharing!!.. those types of emails have been around since the birth of the internet… I receive emails of such nature on occasion.. I usually ignore the emails, mark them as a scam and delete them.. I rarely do business through a email but close the email and go directly to the website not using the email if I feel the need to… 🙂
Hope you have a pleasant journey filled with love and happiness and until we meet again..
May the sun shine all day long
Everything go right, nothing go wrong
May those you love bring love back to you
May all the wishes you wish come true
May peace be within you
May your heart be strong
May you find whatever you’re seeking
Wherever you may roam

Hi Larry,
Like you I never click on any links on emails, instead I go to the website directly. But this time, I almost fell for it.
One has to be always aware.
Thank you and blessings to you!

I hope you enjoy your trip to Brazil and you can soak it up and keep it with you fresh for months after you return. There is so much that causes fear and scams seem everywhere. I see that you are not a naïve person and you responded rather than reacted. Calm responses will always keep us from saying or doing what we regret later. I am thinking Brazil now and wondering what foods, sights and sounds you are being wrapped in. Enjoy! Soak!

Hi David,
Thank you for pointing out that I responded, instead of reacting. That is a huge progress for me. I am so reactive, but working on that daily!
Brazil was insane this time, I had no time for anything. I will post about it.
I am hoping that my next trip, in 3 weeks, I will get to enjoy Brazil and my family.
Blessings to you!

Sometimes in Penticton I try to see it as a tourist. I know I have lived here for 31 years and so doing so reminds me of how fortunate I am. I hope your trips you can just relax also. I look forward to your notes also!

That is a great way to look at it. And now with M, coming with me, perhaps I will have some time to be a tourist and guide with him. 🙂

What a letter. As soon as I read it I felt it was a scam. I just had a taxi driver the other night who was getting WAY too personal with all of this questions and trying to get my name, wanted me to type my address into his phone, telling me he was looking for someone to date… It was unsettling. What can we do, we are stuck in the taxi, need to get home safely. Now, I hope he’s not a stalker. SIGH…. HAVE FUN IN BRAZIL!

For some reason, it felt real enough that I had to ask my IT guy, and it even fooled him.
OMG, that sounds so scary. It is a tough situation, as you mentioned, being in the car, having to get home, and feeling this vulnerable.
Perhaps he is just a lonely kind person. No one needs to deal with a stalker.
I will post about the trip to Brazil shortly.
Thank you and blessings!

The scammers are infinitely resourceful. We had a real detective phone us about a real fraud on our credit card but I didn’t believe him and called his office!
I hope that your visit to your parents soothes you and makes you less afraid, Ana. K x
