“The most poetical thing in the world is not being sick.”
― The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare
I rarely get sick.
I was vaccinated with the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, choosing not to have a booster yet. I didn’t want a booster at all, and wanted to hold out for a long as I could. I figured I would get one in April, when I am traveling to Brazil again.
I have always taken all kinds of vitamins and supplements, and since 2020 I have been loading up on Vitamins C, D and Zinc, among others.
I have been mindful, but not paranoid. I have taken precautions, but chose to live as normally as I could. As soon as I could I flew to Brazil to see my parents. I went to casinos, I went on dates, I have met friends. I resumed life as much as I could after the shut down.
“Each patient carries his own doctor inside him.”
― Anatomy of an Illness
On December 26, I woke up with a scratchy throat. I just thought it was the beginning of a cold and I did what I always do: I took an Emergen-C in the morning. They work like magic for me.
When, the next morning, I woke up the same way again, I knew it was something else entirely. I knew I had covid even before taking the test in the evening of December 27,
Since then some symptoms have been changing, evolving, while others have remained the same.
“Be not sick too late, nor well too soon”
―
I have had the following:
- scratchy/sore throat (on and off, mostly during the night)
- headaches (only in the first few days)
- cough (very mild, on and off)
- body aches (only in the first few days)
- post nasal drip (on and off, more now in the last few days)
- mental fogginess (constant)
- lack of energy (constant, everything I do seems to take a lot effort)
- loss of taste (it started on day 4, December 30th and still remains today)
- chest discomfort (I wouldn’t call it a pain, very mild, but noticeable, when I cough or breathe at times)
- anxiety/ a feeling of doom/the all over sensation that I am off. Nothing feels right. (Every single day since it all started)
“The question is not how to get cured, but how to live.”
―
I dislike the question that I get often asked: Where did you get it?
It could have been anywhere. Unless there was a way to know exactly when I got it, I don’t think I will ever find out. Plus it feels like an accusation, or perhaps I am just hypersensitive now?
Other than my cousin that has been living in my apartment since he arrived from Brazil a month ago, none of my friends and people I have been in contact with have the virus. We all went to dinner with friends on December 23 and then had friends over on December 25. All those friends are healthy. My sister included.
It is crazy that my sister didn’t catch it. She has been with my cousin and I every day. She also takes the train into Manhattan daily and has had people in her office with the virus. Perhaps she is immune. She took the Pfizer 2 dose vaccine, I took the Johnson and Johnson 1 dose. Perhaps that is the difference.
At any rate, I hope to be 100% real soon. This off feeling is very annoying. I normally feel like conquering the world. Now I have no energy to do the dishes. I am still working from home daily because I have to. But I have been doing about 30% of what I would probably be doing normally.
I am glad I was the one to catch and not my parents. If I am this healthy and I am struggling, I can only imagine how awful it is for people with underlying conditions and weaker immune systems.
I hope you all are healthy and happy and on the way to making 2022 the best year of your lives!
“A chronic invalid has but one thought about his identity: He doesn’t want to be a sick man. The rest of the discussion seems frivolous to him-an immense privilege of the healthy. Still, I’m a novelist, and so I pursue it.” ―
Sorry to hear about catching Covid. Hope you feel better soon 🙏

Awww, hope you start to feel better soon, Ana. ‘Where did you get it?’ is a silly question anyway and what does it matter? People can carry it without knowing they have it and the lateral flow tests are unreliable. Keep your chin up, chuck. Nothing lasts forever 🙂

Dearest Ana, I do wish you speedy recovery. All those symptoms you had I had as well a year ago. It does leave you without energy. You can catch it absolutely everywhere, there are people who have no symptoms, are even vaccinated and they have it without knowing and they spread it. I wouldn’t worry about that, getting better is the most important thing. Do take good care of yourself and take it easy. Big hug from me and healing vibes! ♥

It does not matter (where) you caught it! Especially like you mentioned ‘there aren’t ways of finding out exactly where!’. What matters now, is you getting better and better. Sending you healing vibes. Keep that spirit up. It’s ‘vital’ to overcoming this ‘viral’…thing.

Our systems have completely given up on the idea of contact tracing; Covid and its variations are far too prevalent and we are all in this for the long haul.
Wishing you the best for a quicker and full recovery.

Thank you for sharing!!… hope you are on the mend and get to feeling much better soon!!.. none of the vaccinations, even with the booster, are 100% and the more public places (where one mingles with other people) one ventures without precautions the greater chance one could get the virus, even if one does take precautions it is still possible though less of a chance… 🙂
Perhaps it is one of your past dates getting even for dumping him 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
Hope you get well soon and until we meet again….
May flowers always line your path
and sunshine light your way,
May songbirds serenade your
every step along the way,
May a rainbow run beside you
in a sky that’s always blue,
And may happiness fill your heart
each day your whole life through.

Hi Larry,
Indeed , nothing is 100%. Every time I leave my apartment, and socialize with people I know there is a chance of contracting the virus. I believe that being vaccinated, being healthy and taking vitamins and supplements have helped with the symptoms. I believe it could have been much worst otherwise.
Very possible some of my prior dates hated my guts enough to send me covid lol
Thank you for the good wishes and blessings to you!

Thank you for the video! Great information! I will look for others from them.
Living in the US, and terrified of getting wrinkles, I don’t get as much sun as I did when I lived in Brazil.
Years ago I was deficient in D, and since then Vitamin D has been a part of my daily routine.
I wonder if that is another reason why my sister didn’t get it.
Blessings to you!

Oh, I am so very sorry that you caught it. You are right, many of your symptoms are much like what it is to cope with an auto-immune disease on a daily basis. I struggle with fatigue, brain fog, and sore muscles/joints with flares and I associate those symptoms along with anxiety as linked to inflammation. I have found that omega-3 (fish or krill oil), tart cherry, turmeric, and other things that reduce inflammation like ibuprofen really help. I don’t know if it will make a difference with covid, but if might be worth a try if your symptoms hang on. 😦

Hi Midnight Knitter,
I am so sorry that these are some of the issues you deal with on a daily basis. I cannot even imagine it.
Thank you for the recommendation on the supplements to address inflammation. I will definitely look into them. Reducing body inflammation is one of of my goals.
Sending you blessings and wishes that you continue to get better and better!

I hope that they work for you. I was really struggling with brain fog at one point (I now understand that it is a sign of swelling in the brain!) and took the tart cherry on the recommendation of a friend. I got up the next morning and felt… *normal*. It was just extraordinary! The juice is too hard on my stomach so I take the capsule supplements now when I get bad. Good luck!

Your symptoms sound very similar to mine when I got Covid a year ago. So probably not Omicron, as it’s meant to be milder and most often without the loss of taste. Sorry this had to happen to you despite doing everything right. Good news: the brain fog and anxiety do pass! All the best for a healthy 2022!

Hi Mel,
In the beginning I thought I had contracted Omicron, but when I lost my taste I realized I probably had the original, or perhaps Omicron is mutating into loss of taste also.
I am getting better and better daily!

So sorry to hear that you’ve been fit so hard by the coronavirus. It’s a blessing that you have not had to be hospitalized. With the Omicron variant being so highly contagious within the early stages of infection, it will be difficult to know exactly where and when you contracted the virus.

As someone who had it before there was a vaccine.. Dec 31st confirmed positive, lived in hell for the first weeks of 2021.. Living like there is no pandemic is never smart, no vitamins, no matter how healthy… it can find you. I hope you feel better soon as I have had Long Haul Covid for 11 1/2 months now..and it can be worse than actual Covid at times. I’ve had everything from my nails peel off, to chunks of hair on my pillow, to cysts growing on my hands, to major cognitive disfunction due to brain fog. consider yourself lucky – but please do me a favour and get a check up from your doctor just to be on the smart side. There is no ‘natural immunity’ it doesn’t exist. So please get your booster and check up and stay safe. 🙂
