a day skiing, audits and auditors, back to reality, best food, Breckenridge Colorado, living life, loving life, skiing vacation, tapas restaurant, worst food
“I feel the need to endanger myself every so often.” ―
After returning from Florida, we spent one week in NY then went skiing in Colorado. Breckenridge was divine. Too bad we cannot be on vacation forever. Real life was here waiting for me.
The audit headache continues. The new auditor that we had to hire is proving to be more difficult than the actual regulators. He has given me information that is different than the regulation that I know. At this point, with 2 weeks to go, I have no choice, but just go along and get this done. After this audit is submitted then I will have decisions to make.
Right now, after putting out a fire, I am taking a break to have coffee. I am using this moment to tell you about my skiing vacation.
I am sharing some of the pictures from Breckenridge below. Here are some of the highlights and lowlights:
- We got upgraded to first class on the flight there. On the return we were upgraded to Delta comfort only, but still we had tons of room and a great flight.
- The shuttle from and to the airport worked out perfectly. We didn’t want to rent a car or to take a chance with Ubers.
- I was inflicted with altitude sickness for 2 days. I missed one day of skiing. Still, the good 4 days more than made up for those 2 days.
- The weather was perfect!! It snowed overnight a couple of days, and also on the last day there.
- It was not crowded on the mountain. There was no wait on the lift lines.
- My new ski boots are amazing. Easy to put on and remove it, and so comfortable. Comfortable boots makes such a difference.
- My new ski goggles, with room for my prescription glasses, was a game changer. In the past I was pretty much blind on the mountain. Now I can read the signs, use my phone, etc.
- My new skis are great, and it means that I don’t have to deal with the hassle of renting. I will still rent when bring my own skis may not be convenient.
- We ate out 4 evenings. I am highlighting 2 of the meals here. The best and the worst.
- The best meal was at Mimos Fancy Tapas. Everything was delicious and perfect. From the service to the ambiance. We will definitely return next time we are there.
- The worst meal was at Mi Casa Mexican Restaurant. The food had no flavor and the service was inattentive. Will never return and will warn others about it.
- Michael wanted to stay in Breckenridge an extra week. I have to keep reminding him that I still have a job. So, we came back.
Skiing continues to terrify me. I still struggle with it. I feel out of control. I panic. Still, I continue… because… I absolutely adore it! Go figure…
Now my focus is on getting this audit done. We will probably go back to Florida, and also go to Brazil at some point in the next few months. So much to do, so little time available to do it.
I hope everyone is having a great March!

I apologize if I am double commenting, but it looks like my first comment failed. Anyway, I was just saying that despite the two days of altitude sickness you had it sounded like you had a great vacation. We’ve been there seven times including last year. Therefore, I recognized the places you took photos of. Great photos by the way. We love that Breckenridge is so family oriented. The only bad memories I have of Breckenridge is when I broke my middle finger in the Horseshoe bowl and had altitude sickness for two days, like you.

Hi Thomas,
No apologies necessary… WordPress is funny that way. I always struggle with leaving comments and likes on blogs.
Even with being sick the first couple of days, I had an amazing time, and cannot wait to go back. It is a place that we, like you, will keep going back to in the future.
Thank you for the compliment on my photos. I often forget to take pictures, so I am glad I was able to get a few, and even better that you recognized the places.
Oh no, sorry about your broken finger. I hope that it happened on the last day, and that it is 100% healed by now.
Thank you for commenting and blessings to you!

Thank you so much Star on the Forehead. Yes my finger is healed. Breckenridge has a lot to offer. The kids loved it, especially Ripparoos forest, the Imperial Bowl with highest ski lift in the western hemisphere, and the crepe place downtown.

I heard a lot of the kids and families talking about the Riparoos Forest. I didn’t make it to the crepe place this time, but I did enjoy it when I was there before. As far as the Imperial Bowl, or any bowl for that matter, I don’t think I will be getting to those any time soon 🙂

The crepe place is great. We also like Swiss Haven restaurant, but it is a bit expensive.

It’s great to hear Breck wasn’t crowded and you had good weather for skiing. I’m assuming you were there on weekdays. Coloradoans lament the fact the slopes have become more crowded post-COVID, because suddenly everyone seems to be more flexible with their schedules. Breck is also a great place to visit in the summer. We river raft, ride bikes from Breck to Frisco and back (dedicated paths), and take a spin on the Alpine Slide (Peak 8, if I remember), where you go flying down concrete half-pipes on little plastic sleds. Altitude sickness is the worst. Always spend 24 hours at Denver-level before you head into the Rockies!

Hi Dave,
We made a point of avoiding the weekend. We arrived on Sunday and left on a Saturday. I didn’t really see a difference in the crowds from when I was there years ago.
That is exactly what a local was telling us: how much fun Breck is in the summer. We want to be there one summer and check it out. We liked Breck so much we are even entertaining the idea of living there… that is, if we can afford it.
When we go back we will spend one night in Denver, and hopefully be acclimated by the time we get to Breck.
Blessings!

There’s a lot to like about Breck. I think the appeal is in the size of the town (big enough to live in, yet “small”) and the proximity to I-70 – not right on it like Copper and Vail but close enough to easily get to those other resorts and towns if you wanted to. Also, you can get to Breck from the back side (from Colorado Springs) without dealing with the traffic on I-70 at all. But as you say, if you can afford it…

It seems you know a lot about the area. We really don’t know anything, other than a couple of trips to Breck. We plan on getting to know more the area when we have more time. Thank you for all the info 🙂

It was great, even with the altitude sickness.
My first time there I didn’t get sick, so it caught me by surprise. Next time we will probably spend a day in Denver before getting there.
Blessings!

Good luck with the audit. I’ve had IRS fights so maybe they’re similar? Glad you got a break.

Hi Jacqui,
Thanks heaven the IRS hasn’t shown up yet – hopefully they never will!
The audits I deal with are with our regulators – NFA-The National Futures Association. It is never a good experience 😦
Blessings to you!

Ironically my son has been talking about a trip to Colorado, but he is talking about a train trip. I enjoyed hearing about your ski holiday, first class! Many wonderful places to ski here and close to home is Apex. I remember once we stayed up at the mountain for three nights and there was powder, so much powder the road was closed one night to the hill. It was like bouncing down the hill on a mattress, my best experience on skis ever. I always love the silence on the hill, and seeing the snowflake designs on my sleeves before they melt. I am glad to hear you invested in new equipment, it makes all the difference! Another wonderful trip and memory with Michael. I love all your stories ! – hugs, David

Hi David,
Michael and I were just researching train trips. I would love to take some, specially to Canada. Unfortunately I don’t have much time because of work, so most trips are on plane to save time.
It sounds amazing your descriptions of your best experience on skis – just heavenly. That is one of the things I love about being on a snowy mountain – the silence! And the immensity and beauty!
I hope one day to visit your area – it seems gorgeous any time of the year!
Thank you for following my journey along. I am going to try to post more. Most of my life don’t make it to the blog.
Hugs and blessings to you!

♥ there are some sweet trips also that are shorter. I have been across by train when I was a child but I am now interested in taking the train for a short trip – possibly Jasper to Prince George or Prince George to Prince Rupert. Both of these are short, super scenic and inexpensive. I would just overnight at the destination for a couple days and return.
I have never been to Jasper and Prince Rupert it would nice to revisit – tons of eagles there and best place for seafood including halibut. – David

Thank you for sharing a part of your world!!.. think positive in that the audit is helping you appreciate life and its adventures and perhaps following Rose Milligans advice… 🙂
Dust if you must, but wouldn’t it be better
to paint a picture, or write a letter,
bake a cake, or plant a seed.
Ponder the difference between want and need.
Dust if you must, but there is not much time,
with rivers to swim and mountains to climb!
Music to hear, and books to read,
friends to cherish and life to lead.
Dust if you must, but the world’s out there
with the sun in your eyes, the wind in your hair,
a flutter of snow, a shower of rain,
this day will not come round again.
Dust if you must, but bear in mind,
old age will come and it’s not kind.
And when you go, and go you must,
you, yourself, will make more dust!
(Rose Milligan)
Hope you are able to follow your dreams, all is well in your part of the universe, your path is paved with love and happiness and until we meet again…
May the sun shine all day long
Everything go right, nothing go wrong
May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May those you love bring love back to you
And may all the wishes you wish come true
May your troubles be less
Your blessings be more
And nothing but happiness
Come through your door
May the kindness you spread
Keep returning to you
(Irish Saying)
