Michael gave me a bike. We went to Walmart on Monday and I chose one that I thought would be perfect. I didn’t want anything too expensive, as I didn’t know if I would actually use it. We can always upgrade it later.
The last time I was on a bike was over 35 years ago. I remember driving around New Rochelle, and at one point a man sticks his head out of his car window and yells: “Lady, you are going to kill yourself”.
To this day I don’t know what I did wrong. Perhaps I was driving on the wrong side of the road. What I know is that. I don’t remember ever riding a bike after that.
We got the bike home and after a few iffy moments, I was able to balance myself and actually ride it.
I rode a few minutes yesterday, and a few more today. I am taking it very slow, as I have tendency to over do it. My butt already hurts, even though we swapped the hard seat that the bike comes with, with a much softer one.
I struggle with the gears. I have no idea when to use them. I guess it will come. I hope to ride a little each day and hopefully explore trails with Michael.

Riding a bike is so healthy and it’s a pretty one.

What a fun idea! I’d like to have a bike one day too. Like you, I haven’t ridden in years, but I’m sure it will be easy. Have fun!

Hi Monica,
Michael has a bike, so I thought it would be something else we can do together.
It is a bit scary at first, specially downhills, but I am going very slow. It is coming back 🙂
Blessings!

Please wear a helmet when you ride–and don’t worry about the gears. Unless you are going up hills, you can find a middle gear and stay there. (I swapped out my 24-gear bike for a 7-gear bike, and I still only use 2 of them). Have fun.

Hi Madeline,
Thank you for the helmet reminder. I haven’t used one yet, but will wear Michael’s until mine arrives. I normally just go for a few minutes around the complex here.
Learning the gears will come, or so I hope 🙂
Blessings to you!

Good for you! And nice looking bike! You will love riding again.
Like you, I hadn’t been on a bike in about thirty years. In 2022, I bought a beach cruiser. No speeds and old-school coaster brakes you push back on. It took me a week to get up the hill behind my apartment without walking the bike – and I tried every day. My stamina grew; I got stronger. I love the fresh air and sunshine when I ride. I now have a 7-mile route mapped out in town. I can add miles by adding an extra loop in the park or an extra loop around the school.
Have fun!!

Hi Maddie,
hahaha, I am just like you! I couple of times I had to walk the bike uphill. Now I still struggle, but I don’t have to get off the bike anymore. The gears still elude me, but it is coming.
I almost got a beach cruiser, and question now if made the right choice with the one I got. Today I did a loop around the neighborhood… it was tough, but so rewarding to complete it.
Have fun on your rides!
Thank you and wishing you a blessed weekend!

I love your post! I live in Annapolis MD and I was going to start riding my bike but it has been snowing so I will wait a bit longer to do this. Reading your post put a smile on my face and it also reminded me that when I finally start riding my bike I have to go at it slowly. Great post!

Hi Marcela,
Slow and steady it is best! My knee has been sore, because I believe I overdid, so I am taking today off from riding.
It is hard being 57 and thinking I am 17 🙂
Have fun riding, when you start again. Blessings!

Yes, slow and steady! I just turned 56 so I know what you mean. I like to think that I am still in my 30’s, but my body tells me otherwise. I’m looking forward to riding my bike soon. Take care

Yes we are! Time does go by fast, but you know what? As I have gotten older, I have learned to be more appreciative of things I didn’t notice before and I worry a lot less.

Good point, we start to realize what is really important in life. Thanks Heaven for that wisdom that age brings.

Persist with the bicycle, Ana! Comfort with the gears will come, and even if it doesn’t you can graduate to an e-bike like my wife did recently. I prefer a regular bike for a better workout, but with her e-bike we can ride together and it doesn’t matter if we encounter hills. There’s a certain freedom in riding a bicycle, which only seems more enjoyable with age. Riding has become a part of our weekly routine here in South Carolina.

Hi Dave,
I am persisting 🙂 Every morning I bike for around 30 minutes, and play around with the gears… it is coming. Slowly, but surely.
For now I am sticking with this bike, instead of an e-bike, for the exercise. I am enjoying it so much, and I know I am going to miss it when I am in NY.
Thank you and wishing you a blessed weekend!
