“Good bread is the most fundamentally satisfying of all foods; and good bread with fresh butter, the greatest of feasts.” ―
One of my Christmas gifts, from my sister, was a bread maker. I had mentioned wanting to buy one for the longest time, but never did. I was not sure I would really use it.
I have been using it non-stop. As soon as we got to Florida, Michael ordered one for the house. He also got an air-fryer and toaster-over, two other appliances that I love.
In NY I made a whole wheat bread with molasses and honey, and also a chocolate cake. I made the whole wheat bread 3 times. It is so good.
The chocolate cake was good, but I think I like better in the over and I can make a larger one. I filled the cake with 2 different fillings, one with coconut cream, and the other chocolate fudge cream. I frosted with chocolate ganache. All the chocolate made from scratch. So delicious!
Here in Florida, I made a 100% whole wheat bread. This one had only whole wheat flour and honey. It didn’t contain white flour, molasses and the hint of chocolate, like the one in NY. Michael liked this one even better.
This morning I made a Rye bread, Michael’s favorite bread. I don’t care for rye bread and specially caraway seeds, so I used only one teaspoon of it, instead of two. Next time I will use two.
Next I will make a white loaf. I also want to try Irish soda bread.

Lovely breads!! Your bread machine looks awesome! When I was raising all six kids I made a lot of bread. I would also buy organic spring and winter wheat in 50 lb bags. I had a grinder to make my own flour. Baking bread makes a house smell so good! I loved to eat the heel of the bread when it’s warm and slathered in butter. My favorite part of the loaf. Have fun!

Hi Andi,
I cannot imagine making my own flour, but I did joke with Michael that we will need to buy the 50 pound bags of flour from Costco.
The heel is my favorite part of any bread, fresh or not. Warm and with butter it is just my version of heaven!!
Blessings to you!

Hi Ute,
And it tastes great! It takes at least 3 hours… not as fast as I would like. But it can be programmed, so that bread is made by the time one gets up. I haven’t tried that yet.
Blessings!

Awesome! I make my own bread, and it tastes better than the one purchased in the store. I need to try the cake recipes that came with my bread maker machine.

Hi Edward,
I want to try the pound cake. I think that one will come out better. The one I made was a chocolate cake, but the only chocolate that went into it was chocolate chip, so I added chocolate powder to it.
Let me know if you end up trying. Do you have a favorite bread recipe?
Thank you and blessings!

After some trial and error I found the right recipe for whole wheat bread ( at least for my taste). 1 1/4 water, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 1/4 cup maple syrup, 3 cups of whole wheat flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt and 1 teaspoon instant yeast. Setting is 1LB, Program 3 color light. It comes out great every time.

Thank you! I am going to try, but will need to substitute honey for the maple syrup. I don’t like the taste or smell of maple syrup.

Honey is good also. I changed to syrup because it gave it a sweeter taste.

Fresh bread with warm melted butter is indeed so delicious! Your bread looks great.
I have an Air Fryer too and love it. Such a timesaver and encourages healthy eating too.

I think it is one of the best inventions! In NY I don’t have a toaster oven, so I even toast bread on my air fryer.
Blessings to you!

Pure torture – cake and fresh baked bread. Thanks for making me smile.
My Mom baked fresh bread when I was young and made jams also. I remember all of us would be freezing cold from tobogganing and half the neighbourhood would fill up our tiny kitchen. Mom loved those times (the 60’s) even though we had little. She would recall the little kids asking (and she would speak in a little voice) “Mrs Folstad, can we have a piece of bread?” Mom laughed and smiled about it every time she recalled those times. The children had bread and jam in our little kitchen and not just in the winter. Mom was very kind and generous and loved children.
I used to use a bread machine and loved using the timing feature. I taped the recipe inside a kitchen cupboard door so it was handy and then at night I would fill up the bread maker and start it. When I woke up the fresh bread would be just done and then I would set it to cool on the counter while I got ready for work. It always brought back memories of growing up at home and my wife makes jams and chutneys also.

haha, sorry to torture you David!
Food has a way of bringing on childhood memories. Your mom sounds like she was just a lovely, generous person.
jam was not really a thing in Brazil. I do remember visiting relatives in the countryside, arriving just as the fresh bread was coming out of the wood stove. Thick slices was then cut and slathered with homemade butter.
I haven’t experimented with the timer function, but does sound enticing to wake up to fresh bread.
What is the difference between jam and chutney? actually I just Googled and it seems chutneys contain vinegar.
By the way, I am buying a bike today. I haven’t been on one if over 30 years. Stay tuned for details 🙂
Blessings to you!

I am so jealous! I loved all the things we made with my breadmaker. We had scratch-made pizza a lot, because it made the dough so easy. And then, I learned of my gluten intolerance, and I eventually gave it away. 😞 enjoy experimenting!

I am sorry about your gluten intolerance. I have been told I have a sensitivity for gluten as well, but for now I don’t see an issue, so I still eat gluten.
In the recipe book, there are a bunch of gluten free recipes. I eventually will try them.
Thank you and blessings to you!

Your breads look delicious! Nice job on the cake, too. I never thought of making cake in my bread machine.
I make a farmhouse bread by hand. Super easy, and I love the recipe. The number one use of my bread machine now is for my pasta dough! I hate making pasta by hand; it never comes out right, but it’s perfect in the bread machine.
Have fun baking! 🙂

Hi Maddie,
I never thought about making pasta, but perhaps I will give it a try. Farmhouse bread? I never heard of. Care to share the recipe?
Thank you and blessings to you!

Once the pasta dough is made, I use the attachment on my KitchenAid mixer to roll the dough and cut the pasta. So easy.
This is where I learned to make the Farmhouse loaf. I love this wet “slap and fold” method.

Thank you for the link and for the pasta tip. Perhaps one of these days I will try pasta.
But the farmhouse bread I will definitely try. And I will follow John Kirkwood for other recipes. 🙂

every time I ever used the bread maker, I had it look perfect. Unfortunately looks aren’t everything. The crust was hard as bones and I always ended up mining my bread hollow.

I had no idea you could bake a cake in a bread maker, but I guess that’s all cake is…bread?
Is it easy to use? The bread looks really good.

Hi KE
In the oven is better, but it is actually pretty good.
haha, kind of…. add sugar to bread mixture and it is somewhat like cake 🙂
It is very easy to use. I am considering taking the dough and baking it in the oven, so I can make different shapes.
Blessings to you!
