best not to get sick, can't afford to get sick, healthcare crisis, I can't write tags now without thinking of Rob and Cassa :-), overcharged and unhappy, take care of your body, too expensive to get health, vertigo symptoms
Disclaimer: This may sound like I am bashing all doctors. I am not! There are plenty of great ones out there. I am only venting my frustration with some recent experience with my doctors.
“Laughter and tears are both responses to frustration and exhaustion. I myself prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning do to do afterward.” ―
Is everyone as sick of the healthcare industry as I am ?
Perhaps I just don’t understand how it all works. I don’t go to the doctor often, but lately every time I go I end up disappointed. I always feel that I am being overcharged for poor service.
Months ago I went to an ENT because of vertigo symptoms. First I was given an hearing test, then I saw the doctor. When leaving I asked how much I had to pay. They said my co-pay of $65.00. I paid and left. A couple of days later I get a bill for another $65.00. Apparently there was a co-pay for the hearing test.
Why wasn’t that disclosed at the time? I am guessing a doctor’s office cannot charge 2 co-pays for the same visit, and that is a way around that.
On that visit most of my symptoms had subsided, so the doctor couldn’t arrive at any conclusion. He said to stop all medication (I mentioned I had taken allergy and motion sickness pill a day before) and come back in one week. I asked: “What if I don’t have any symptoms by then, should I still come back?”
He said: “yes, I still want to see you.” I didn’t go back. It didn’t make any sense to me. I felt that all he wanted to do was charge me for another visit.
“I only care to see doctors when I am in perfect health; then they comfort one, but when one is ill they are most depressing.” ―
I am entitled to one free physical a year. I went to get one on December 14. Today I got a bill for $45.00. When I called the office, the person said it is because of the Vitamin D blood work. “Your insurance doesn’t pay for that” – she said.
I called Aetna who said that they had paid for Vitamin D 100%. The problem was that the doctor put in the wrong code. Instead of putting the code as Annual Physical they coded as a regular visit.
Honest mistake or trying to get away with something? The doctor’s office is still saying they are right and the billing department has now referred it to the Claims Department to review it.
“Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed.”
―
While on the phone with Aetna I confirmed that they cover 100% of the COVID antibody test. I needed to get a doctor’s prescription though.
I called my doctor’s office and they said they couldn’t just issue a prescription. The doctor needed to see me.
What for? I asked. I saw him a month ago. She then offered a virtual visit. Is it free? I asked. Of course it is not free. After inquiring with Billing she came back and said it was around $49.00.
I refuse to pay $49 to look at the doctor on the screen so he can write me a prescription.
“It was a little thing, but on top of the other little things, it broke something in me.” ―
It all sounds like a big scam to me. My employer pays almost 1K per month for the insurance for myself. I rarely use it, specially with $65 each time I go.
I hate the feeling of being taken advantage of. I hate that all is not explained to the patient at the time of treatment. I should have been told that the hearing test was an additional co-pay. I should have been told that asking the doctor to check Vitamin D levels could incur an extra charge.
It all should be easier than that. I am now learning to ask the right questions. The main question: Is this going to cost extra?
This is another wake up call to emphasize the need to take care of my body as best as I can, so that I deal with the medical profession as little as necessary.
“We’ve established the most enormous medical entity ever conceived… and people are sicker than ever. We cure nothing! We heal nothing!” ―
I have some experience with taking my parents to the doctor’s. Evenyually we found a GP (General Practitioner) who is responsible, considerate of patients financial ability and really has a heart for patient care. Before him, we got the run around with specialists and out of pocket payments. I really feel for you.

The Oscar Wilde quote has always been my philosophy. I am diligent about going for checkups because it scares me to go when I’m sick. Actually, even checkups make me nervous because I’m always afraid they’ll find something. As my mother used to say about doctors, God help you if you need them.
As for the cost, I believe in scrutinizing insurance statements. I’ve found many mistakes, and I am guessing most people don’t even look at them.

You mother is so right!! 🙂
Thanks for pointing that fact out – I will start reviewing insurance statements for accuracy. I am one of those people that assumes that those statements are correct. They arrive, I just place them in a file and that is it.
Wishing you a blessed week! ♥♥

Hi Cindy,
Now I want to know about that self inflicted injury… was it lifting weights? running into a tree branch? kicked by a grandchild?
Whatever it was, it was an expensive experience, if not painful!
This is the year that I will be doing my first colonoscopy – I am not looking forward to it 😦
Medicare in 6 days? You look much too young for that!!
Thank you for hugs! Sending you a bunch! Blessings! ♥♥

Ok Ana Star,
Not weights, tree and no grandkids here.😜
Here goes.. my girls got me one of those curling iron things.. Beach wave or something like that. so I pressed the button, stopped to hold it for 15 sec. (I almost can’t say it, as I cringe when i do). then i had to press it to go the other way BUT I went towards my head. YIKES!!!! And I burned the s___ out of my skull.. 4th degree. Went to urgent.. did what I was told, it didn’t heal after 6 wks. Had to go back.. they told me “put this solution on your head” the one I use for my eyes for dry eye looked like the same one.. (hold on gotta get my glasses on lol but didn’t use any at the time) and put the head solution in my eye. Excruciting pain.. couldn’t see and had to go to ER. YES, EXPENSIVE AND PAINFUL!!!
Well, no b.d. this year since I’m a leap year baby but you get it a mo. early. AWWWWW thanks, that’s nice to here!!!!! I’ve never been sooo happy BIG PAY RAISE!!!! You’re so welcome and thanks for the blessings!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️🤗🤗🤗🤗🙏🙏🙏

OMG! that sounds so painful! First the head burn, then the eye – BIG OUCH!!! I hope they are both 100% now.
You should write a post about it, alerting people to the dangers of mixing up bottles of medication and of curling irons.
I do know someone that had been using some other medication thinking it was eye drops. She used it for a few days until her son realized the mix up – fortunately there was no harm done.
Hopefully that BIG PAY RAISE will go towards a lot fun adventures now that you enter your golden years 😉 And hopefully you will write all about it.

Maybe I will if I can figure out how to frame it.

Think of it like this:
Double nickles is just chunk change! You are as young as you feel and 25 is a great number!!!
In the old days that would be old but now, it’s pretty young considering the difference of times. Well, you don’t have to embrace it but it will be a lot easier if you do. Think of how great you feel and are.
Me too… I guess I just feel age is imaterial till i look at the phone accidentaly and think who is that and see the drooping features. You are incredibly kind, thank you Anna Star! ❤️

I remember looking at people in their 40s and thinking that they were old.
For some reason, 55 is hitting me differently – it seems so concrete – so final. I guess the pandemic is helping with the feeling that life has passed me by and I have done nothing.
Come back any time and I will tell you how amazingly you look! It is the whole package that makes you young: beautiful face, shapely body, positive attitude and happy spirit! 🙂
A blessed weekend to you! ♥♥

Agree, I don’t trust how they code things either. Last year, I went to Emergency Care, I was in between jobs, so no health insurance. They wanted to charge me $250 for the visit. I said… is that what you charge people with NO insurance? MORE than what someone who has insurance gets charged. ANYHOW, I had such a sore throat, I took the visit. After three months, they sent me ANOTHER bill for $65. I asked what that was about. They said for the 1/2 hr the doctor spent with me. LOL – it takes 5 minutes to look and swab someone’s throat.
Anyhow — I fought that and I fought the $250. They ended up giving me a 30% discount on no insurance and canceled the other charge.
I think they figure if we don’t complain, they will try to make money. HORRIBLE – I try not to go to the doctor unless, I really have to. Like you said, we always leave being told we are fine. 🙂

Gosh, I hear some ER horror stories. I have been advised never to go to the Emergency Room in a hospital unless I am dying because it will cost an arm and leg.
Lately the health insurance companies are advising to go to alternative clinics and other small centers instead of the hospital. Supposedly it will be better treatment and better price.
I am glad that you fought and got the bill adjusted. Many don’t complain and just pay up.
Either they say I am fine, and I feel like I am imagining things or they want to run all kinds of expensive tests. And all of that without looking up from the computer screen and actually really talking to me and asking questions. I definitely need to find better doctors.
Blessings to you, and I am glad you are fine now! ♥♥

Yes… keep questioning your bill. Most of the time they are coding things incorrectly and with COVID and no in person visits, they are probably trying to make up for payments. Doctors are businessmen/women too. Unfortunately, fact of life and they SHOULD be paid for their services, they studied hard… but it needs to be fair too. ❤

I was surprised that the virtual visits cost the same as an in-person visit as well. My doctor retired last year and I’ve never even met his substitute but I could tell she could care less. It was just get this shot, take this blood test, have your mammo – like talking to a robot!

Hi Jan
I feel the same way. It should be cheaper. Specially to just write a prescription, it is not even a consultation.
Robot is a good description of some doctor I have been to. It didn’t inspire trust or care.
Hopefully we can find better doctors. Blessings to you! ♥♥

Hi Yernasia,
It is unfortunate that we feel the way we do regarding this whole system. I hope to do some research and find doctors that I trust and that care about taking care of their patients. And definitely I will get second and third opinions before getting any treatment.

I suppose that I’m in the minority here. I never have to wait for appointments, my co-pays are 35.00 and well defined on when and where I need to pay them, and my GP is wonderful. When I had spinal fusion, my surgeon called my brother when I went under, when I went into the operating room, and when I was back in my hospital room. Of the $40,000.00 it cost, my copay was 800.00. I’m healthy, so I’m not in need of much medical attention, other than my annual physical and annual dermatology visit.

You are definitely in the minority here, or dare I say, in the entire US.
That is wonderful that you have had such great care and such an expensive procedure for just $800. Count yourself lucky. Most of the time, after any kind of procedure the bills start to trickle in. There is the doctor, the anesthesiologist, then the ICE room, then lab work, then whatever tests you need, and whatever medication. It is insanity.
Was the surgery a complete success? It seems like, but I am just curious. I am always leery of back surgeries.
May I ask what insurance company do you have?
Blessings to you! ♥♥

I have Anthem, and the surgery was a great success. I had c6/c7 fused and have felt great ever since. I had an 2 MRI’s, a Myelogram and three post operative reviews. The MRI’s and Mylelogram had a 35 co-pay each. The post op meds were all on me, but with my prescription discount.

Having lived in the UK, then Egypt and now USA, I feel that the USA health care system is a disorganized mess. It would be so much cheaper to have a limited free system for everyone. In Britain they have a two tiered system, private and public. You can choose what you like but at least everyone has access. That said, I would miss the speed and availability of health providers that I currently have on my husband’s health care.

Perhaps if I learned more about the ins and outs of my insurance plan, and found doctors I like better, I would like it much better than I do.

The only piece of advice I could give you, is to be persistent and patient. We have had a bill of thousands slashed. There are always advocates to appeal to, within the healthcare system that you have. I just asked other Americans what to do! K x

LOL I’ve gone to a few other places and I have to disagree. I go there for the customer service and other features. For example, I want a lot of extra stuff on my glasses due to my crazy prescription, so they’re able to make the lens a little less Coke bottle-ish as well as use some other technology that other places don’t have.
Either way, it’s too much money wherever I go lol

I agree, it is too much money no matter where we go.
I know I generalized by saying that about Lens Crafters. It was really all about one salesperson not caring enough to do a good job. It can happen to any store.

This is just my personal experience. I worked for an ENT Doctor and he did the same exact thing. The amount of money I would take from patients daily was insane. And he always made sure they had a return visit and that they scheduled it with one of us to pretty much ensure they would come back if you had a set appointment. Because there if you didn’t cancel 48hrs before hand, you were charged $25 for being late. And they were very adamant about it. Sometimes he wouldn’t give patients scripts if they had a big enough balance. After workin there for a couple of months. I could no longer watch this or have a hand in it. It made me sick how he overscheduled and over tested patients just for his monetary gain. I quit and that experience left a bad taste in my mouth and I left the healthcare field once again. I am now back to being a Waitress full-time. So sorry you have to go through this. I use all
